about
The third single from The Vernon Spring's timely response record to Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On', is one of the original album's most recognised songs: Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology). Marvin's original is a mournful lament on the destruction of the world by human deeds, yet somehow the production and performance still manages to retain a sense of hope.
In his response track, Sam Beste aka The Vernon Spring has meditated on all the themes of the original, and how they have become even more pressing and relevant in the present hour, creating a stark and unique tapestry of sampled 60s jazz drumming and Russian Orthodox Church singing, which interact with Beste's emotive muted piano performance.
